A GoFundMe campaign has been launched for Belleville police Const. Mike McCurdy following the Sept. 20 shooting at the Sons of Jacob Synagogue.
McCurdy was the second Belleville officer to arrive at the scene after Const. Jeff Smith was shot and wounded.
A GoFundMe was originally set up for Const. Smith, and it has currently raised over $890,000.
According to the fundraiser, McCurdy joined the exchange of gunfire between Smith and the suspect and helped bring the incident to an end.
The campaign was started on behalf of the Jewish community to show gratitude to McCurdy for his role in stopping what organizers describe as a potential mass-casualty event.
The fundraiser also highlights the importance of mental health and recovery following the incident.
The campaign has raised over $10,000 as of the time of publication. Donations are being accepted through the GoFundMe page.
