Many college and university students are on the move with the start of a new school year, about to live in a brand new place they may not be familiar with – which could lead to confusion, delays, or even a tragedy in the case of an emergency.
Fire departments across the province are reminding students moving into new accommodations for the school year to make fire safety part of their move-in plans.
Students are encouraged to identify two ways out of every room, make sure bedroom windows and doors open easily, and keep hallways and stairways clear of clutter.
Roommates should also agree on an outdoor meeting location and review the fire safety information provided by their landlord.
Fire officials say walking through and practising escape routes ahead of time can save critical seconds during an emergency.
