Quinte Conservation has issued an updated Watershed Conditions Statement – Water Safety after heavy rainfall pushed rivers and lakes well above normal seasonal levels.
The region received more than 80 millimetres of rain over a 24-hour period during the holiday weekend, creating conditions similar to the spring runoff. The rainfall also caused several beaver dams to fail, contributing to rapid increases in water levels and several road washouts.
Conservation officials say rivers in the upper Moira watershed and Stoco Lake have already peaked, while downstream areas are expected to crest soon. Water levels remain above normal but are below levels expected to affect buildings, and flooding is not anticipated.
Residents are urged to stay away from fast-moving water and use caution around rivers, lakes and shorelines while conditions improve. Property owners in low-lying areas are encouraged to ensure sump pumps are working and keep drainage systems clear.
The water safety statement remains in effect until Aug. 10 unless updated sooner.
