Construction is underway on Greater Napanee’s new in-town trail, marking the start of a project designed to improve active transportation, recreation and community connections.
The first phase includes brushing and clearing along the former CN Spur Line between Dairy Avenue and the Highway 401 bridge. Contractors will also remove the existing rails, spikes and plates. This work is expected to take about two weeks.
Residents can expect increased truck and heavy equipment traffic, along with temporary dust, noise and other minor disruptions during construction.
The next phase will be completed by Town staff after the summer capital works program. Trail construction is expected to resume in late August or early September, with the project scheduled for completion by October.
The Town says the trail will create new opportunities for walking, running and cycling while improving connections between neighbourhoods, parks and community amenities.
The project has a $70,000 budget funded through development charges. Scrap value from the removed rail is expected to offset most of the rail removal costs, helping reduce overall project expenses.
