The Ontario SPCA and Humane Society is reminding pet owners across Ontario to take precautions as heat warnings are issued in parts of the province.
The organization says extreme heat can quickly lead to serious health risks for animals, including heat exhaustion and heatstroke, and warns that pets rely on people for protection.
Officials stress that leaving animals in parked vehicles is especially dangerous, noting temperatures can rise rapidly even with windows open. Pet owners are urged to leave animals at home in cool, safe spaces.
The SPCA’s No Hot Pets campaign encourages owners to pledge never to leave pets unattended in vehicles.
Outdoor safety tips include providing shade and fresh water, avoiding exercise during peak heat, and checking pavement temperatures to prevent burned paws.
Medical director Dr. Joey Tang says heat can become dangerous very quickly and simple steps can prevent illness.
Pet owners are advised to watch for signs of heatstroke and seek veterinary care immediately if needed.
