The Ontario government says it is raising the speed limit to 110 kilometres per hour on an additional 938 kilometres of provincial highways, including stretches of Highways 401 and 416 in eastern Ontario beginning June 26.
Stretches of Highway speeding up this Friday includes Highway 401 east of Kingston from Highway 15 to Highway 16, and Highway 416 from Cedar Grove Road to Highway 401.
On August 31st, Highway 401 through Kingston from County Road 38 to Highway 15 will also increase. As will Highway 401 from Sidney Street to CNR Overhead Bridge in Belleville, and Highway 401 from Colborne to Cobourg.
Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria says the move will help drivers reach destinations more quickly while maintaining safety.
The province says nearly 89 per cent of its highway network will carry a 110 km/h limit once the changes are fully implemented, up from 43 per cent currently.
Officials say the increase will only apply to highways that have undergone technical reviews and are designed to safely accommodate higher speeds.
