A new memorial fund has been established to support firefighter training and education in Lennox and Addington County while honouring the legacy of longtime firefighter Peter A. Hayes.
The Peter A. Hayes Memorial Fire Services Fund has been created through the Community Foundation for Lennox & Addington. The fund will help individuals pursuing formal fire service education and provide support for firefighter training and equipment purchases within local departments.
Hayes, a lifelong Napanee resident, served a combined 37 years in local fire services. He spent three decades with the Greater Napanee Fire Department before joining Stone Mills Fire Department in 2017. He retired from Stone Mills in December 2023 after cancer forced him to step away from active service. Hayes served as a captain at Station 3 in Newburgh and was widely respected as a mentor and leader.
The fund was established by Hayes’ fiancée, Louise McKee, who plans to work with local fire officials to raise additional support.
The Community Foundation said the fund will help continue his commitment to firefighter training, public safety and community service for years to come.
