A neurosurgery team at Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) has completed a Canadian first by using real-time imaging technology to help remove a brain tumour with greater precision.
Doctors used a handheld device called Convivo during surgery on patient Rick Savoie, who has a recurring glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. The tool allowed surgeons to see tumour cells in real time while operating.
“It’s essentially bringing a form of a microscope into the OR,” said neurosurgeon Dr. Jamie Purzner, explaining that the technology helps guide decisions instantly during surgery.
The device uses advanced imaging to highlight cancer cells that are not visible to the eye. Surgeons were able to remove the tumour completely while protecting Savoie’s ability to speak.
“This gave us additional confidence to remove tissue that otherwise looked normal,” said Dr. Teresa Purzner.
Savoie said the surgery improved his quality of life and gave him more time with family after previous procedures affected his speech.
