The Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board has received a $40,000 grant to improve accessibility at five schools across Kingston and Trenton.
The funding comes through the RBC Barrier Buster Grants Program, presented by the Rick Hansen Foundation. The money will be used to install accessible doors and automatic access buttons on gymnasium entrances, helping students with disabilities access physical education spaces more independently.
The upgrades will take place at St. Paul Catholic Secondary School and St. Mary Catholic School in Trenton, as well as Archbishop O’Sullivan Catholic School, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School and St. Thomas More Catholic School in Kingston.
The board says the improvements will make school sports and recreation spaces more inclusive while also increasing accessibility for community members who use the facilities.
The grant builds on ALCDSB’s recent focus on accessible sports, including expanded access to the Paralympic sport of Boccia in schools across the board.
Officials say the project will help ensure students of all abilities can participate more fully in physical activity and school life.
