Stone Mills Township will not allow bring-your-own alcohol at outdoor public events after council voted against adopting a new provincial program.
Council made the decision at its May 26 meeting following changes under Ontario’s Liquor Licence and Control Act, 2019. The province’s updated rules would allow BYOB alcohol consumption at designated cultural or community events starting April 30, 2026, if municipalities approve a bylaw.
To take part, municipalities must also set rules for alcohol use in public spaces and approve eligible events before organizers apply through the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario.
Township staff said the program would not match Stone Mills’ current municipal alcohol policy and raised concerns about staffing needs, liability and public safety risks.
Council directed staff not to create the required bylaw, effectively opting out of the program for now.
The township says it will continue to watch how other Ontario communities handle the change and may revisit the issue later if needed.
