Students at Napanee District Secondary School are preparing for their annual greenhouse plant sale, offering a variety of flowers, vegetables and herbs grown by students in the school’s community program.
myFM visited the greenhouse at NDSS, where student Bradley let us know when the sale is taking place.
Another student, Isabelle, told us more about the different types of plants that are available for purchase.
They also have some flowers and decorative plants including marigolds and geraniums.
The greenhouse program is part of the school-to-community program for students with developmental disabilities. Teacher Nancy Yanaky said the class focuses on hands-on learning.
Money raised from the sale will help cover greenhouse costs for seeds, soil, fertilizer and plant stakes. Extra funds will help subsidize a year-end field trip to Kingston.
Isabelle said helping with the sale has been one of the highlights of the semester. Bradley added that one of his favourite greenhouse activities was misting plants with a peppermint soap to help keep bugs away naturally.
Again, the sale will take place this Friday, May 15 from 11 am to 12 pm through the cafeteria doors. The greenhouse will then be open again after school, from 3-4pm, if any plants remain.
