Hastings-Lennox and Addington-Tyendinaga’s Member of Parliament is calling on the federal government to halt the planned high-speed rail project between Quebec City and Toronto, raising concerns about cost and community impact.
MP Shelby Kramp-Neuman says she has tabled multiple petitions in the House of Commons signed by thousands of constituents.
“They cite a number of very legitimate concerns, including heavy-handed expropriation, dividing up communities with no level crossing, the proposed costs and the questionable benefits the project offers,” Kramp-Neuman said in the House.
The proposed rail network is being developed by Alto. Early estimates place the cost between $60 billion and $90 billion, though the agency says the figures are only for planning.
Community meetings opposing the project have been held across the region, with another scheduled May 13 in Corbyville at the Gerry Masterson Community Centre.
Kramp-Neuman has also shared an e-petition calling for the project to be stopped.
