The Ontario Provincial Police in the East Region are reminding drivers to make sure any vehicle modifications follow provincial laws before hitting the road.
Police say many aftermarket parts sold in stores or online are not legal for on-road use. Drivers are responsible for ensuring all changes meet the rules under Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act.
Officers continue to find vehicles with modifications that affect safety, visibility or compliance. Common issues include loud or altered exhaust systems, covered or unreadable licence plates, unsafe suspension changes and missing mudflaps.
Police also warn about tinted windows that block visibility and improper or coloured lighting, including non-compliant headlights.
Depending on the violation, drivers could face fines, have their licence plates seized, or see their vehicle towed or inspected.
The OPP says enforcement focuses on unsafe cosmetic and performance changes. Accessibility modifications for people with medical or mobility needs are not part of enforcement efforts.
