A fall-prevention program is expanding across the region as health providers work to reduce injuries among older adults.
The Rural Frontenac Lennox and Addington Allied Health Team has launched a wider rollout of its Otago Exercise Program, a 13-week initiative designed to improve strength, balance and mobility.
Falls remain a major concern, accounting for most injury-related hospitalizations among seniors in Canada. Health experts say about one in three older adults experiences a fall each year.
The program is now being offered in several communities, including Napanee, Deseronto, Newburgh, Tamworth, Verona, Arden, and Sydenham.
Organizers say the program uses targeted exercises proven to reduce falls by roughly 30 per cent. Weekly sessions also include education and social activities to help participants stay engaged.
The initiative is part of a broader research partnership with the Canadian Frailty Network and Queen’s University.
