Officials in Prince Edward County are warning residents to avoid contact with wild birds after highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) was detected in waterfowl in the Wellington area.
The county says the virus, commonly known as bird flu, can spread easily among wild birds, backyard flocks, and commercial poultry. It can also pose a small risk to humans in rare cases.
Residents are being urged to stay away from birds, carcasses, and droppings, especially at Wellington Rotary Beach. Dog owners are advised not to walk pets in the area for now.
Health officials recommend washing hands after contact with bird feeders or baths and keeping pets away from wildlife.
Poultry owners are being told to increase biosecurity, including limiting access to barns and cleaning equipment.
The Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative is monitoring the situation, and suspected cases can be reported to its Ontario regional centre.
