The Ontario government is expanding “bring-your-own” alcohol permits for outdoor public events to support tourism and local economies. The change will apply to municipally designated cultural and community events, such as farmers’ markets, movie screenings, art exhibits and neighbourhood festivals.
Starting April 30, 2026, event organizers in participating municipalities can apply for permits through the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario. The permits will allow attendees to bring their own alcohol to consume in designated areas.
Municipalities must first pass a bylaw allowing public alcohol consumption and create a process to determine which events qualify.
The province says the move will lower costs for organizers, save money for attendees and give communities more flexibility. The change is being made through an amendment to a regulation under the Liquor Licence and Control Act ahead of the busy spring and summer event season.
