Students from across the Limestone District School Board put their skills to the test Feb. 26 during the Limestone Skills Competition at St. Lawrence College.
Elementary students competed in hands-on challenges including Construction, Green Energy, Green Industries and several LEGO-based events such as LEGO Mechanics and LEGO Robotics.
Secondary students tackled a different set of skilled trades challenges, including construction projects, electrical-related tasks and culinary competitions.
Now in its 26th year, we spoke with Specialist High Skills Major and Skilled Trades Consultant Geoff Petznick, who has been involved since the beginning, about how the event has evolved over the years.
The event aligned with the framework of Skills Ontario and focused on practical learning, creativity and problem-solving.
Pathways and Equity Consultant with Limestone, Melissa Baker-Cox, says that the community has been a huge part of the growth in this event.
The annual competition serves as a lead-up to provincial events held in early May. First-place winners from the Limestone event may be offered the opportunity to represent the board at the Ontario Skills Competition. Melissa Baker-Cox explains more.
More information about the 2026 LDSB Skills Competition is available on the board’s Expanded Opportunities website.
