A period of extreme cold continues across the region as Environment Canada’s yellow extreme cold warning remains in effect this morning. Wind chill values are expected to range between minus 30 and minus 40, creating dangerous conditions for anyone spending time outdoors.
Officials warn that extreme cold puts everyone at risk, with higher danger for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, outdoor workers, and those without adequate shelter. Residents are urged to watch for cold-related symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle weakness, numbness, and colour changes in fingers and toes.
Environment Canada recommends dressing in warm, removable layers, with an outer layer that is wind resistant. Exposed skin can develop frostbite within minutes under these conditions. Residents are also encouraged to check on older family members, friends, and neighbours, and to ensure pets are kept indoors.
Drivers should carry emergency supplies, including blankets and jumper cables. Outdoor workers are advised to take frequent breaks indoors to warm up.
