Ontario SPCA and Humane Society centres have welcomed more than 50 animals from remote Northern communities this January, as harsh winter conditions and limited supplies continue to challenge residents.
On Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2026, the SPCA received 23 cats, seven puppies, and three dogs, some travelling up to 2,000 kilometres. Volunteers, the Northern Reach Network, and the Bark Bus helped transport the animals to centres in Napanee, Barrie, Orillia, Midland, York Region, and Sudbury.
Earlier in January, the SPCA took in 18 puppies and a nursing dog with her three pups. The organization has also sent more than 12,000 pounds of food to Northern communities to support animals and families.
Arista Wogenstahl, Northern Regional Manager of Community Outreach, says extreme winter weather and limited veterinary services have increased the need for help. The SPCA provides shelter, adoption services, and mobile wellness programs.
As a 100-per-cent donor-funded charity, the SPCA encourages donations to support animals in the North at ontariospca.ca.
