The Ontario government is investing up to $2.7 million to upgrade critical water infrastructure in the Town of Deseronto.
The funding, announced Tuesday by Hastings–Lennox and Addington MPP Ric Bresee, will be used to replace the town’s existing water tower. The project aims to improve the reliability and safety of Deseronto’s drinking water system.
“We are very happy to receive this grant to help replace the existing standpipe with a modern, durable, and-efficient water distribution point,” said Town of Deseronto Mayor Dan Johnston. “Investing in this infrastructure not only addresses our current challenges, but promotes community development by supporting our businesses, schools, and emergency services, fostering a safer and more prosperous community for us all.”
The money comes from the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program’s Health and Safety Water Stream. The province recently increased funding for the stream by $700 million, bringing the total to $875 million.
Ontario says the program is designed to support safe drinking water, housing development, job creation and protection during extreme weather events. The water tower replacement is also expected to help support local businesses, schools and emergency services.
The investment is part of the province’s broader $4 billion Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program, included in Ontario’s $220 billion capital plan. The plan focuses on expanding infrastructure needed to support housing growth and long-term economic stability across the province.
