The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has ended its investigation into the hospitalization of a 39-year-old woman while in police custody in Belleville. The case was closed on January 20, 2026, by SIU Deputy Director Stacey O’Brien.
The woman was arrested on October 1, 2025, after Belleville Police executed a search warrant at a Dundas Street East residence. While in her cell, she reported feeling unwell due to drug withdrawal and was taken to the hospital twice. She was initially treated for suspected withdrawal, later diagnosed with pneumonia, admitted to the ICU, and suffered a heart attack.
The SIU was unable to interview the woman due to her medical condition. Medical records could not be obtained because of privacy restrictions and next-of-kin refusal. Without a statement or confirmation of serious injury, the SIU had insufficient evidence to continue. The unit may reopen the case if circumstances change.
