Ontario has expanded what residents can recycle as part of changes now in place across the province, with Premier Doug Ford saying the goal is to capture more materials and reduce waste.
Ford says the province is focused on increasing recycling and is willing to adjust the system if needed.
As of January 1, more items are accepted in blue and black bins, including coffee cups, toothpaste and deodorant tubes, black plastic containers, frozen juice and ice cream tubs, plastic bags and wrappers, foam packaging, and blister packs. Flexible plastics like chip bags and bread bags are also included.
Ford says recycling facilities have told the province they need more material coming in.
Residents are reminded to rinse and empty containers and place items loose in bins, not inside plastic bags.
Ford says programs will be adjusted if problems arise.
Officials say residents should still check local recycling guides, as collection details may vary by municipality.
