Greater Napanee council heard a deputation from Atura Power about the proposed Napanee BESS Phase 2, a battery energy storage project that would expand the existing facility at the Lennox Generating Station. The addition would add 300 megawatts of capacity with an eight-hour duration, building on Phase 1, which was approved by the Independent Electricity System Operator in 2023.
Atura Power representatives said notices were delivered to 22 nearby residents, with most expressing support and only one household raising concerns. The project is part of a province-wide response to IESO’s call for new electricity resources, as Ontario’s energy demand is expected to grow 20 per cent by 2050.
If municipal support for BESS Phase 2 is granted, successful bids will be announced by June 16, 2026, with construction expected to take two years and operations beginning by 2030.
