The Special Investigations Unit has cleared Ontario Provincial Police officers after a man was shot during a standoff in Camden East earlier this year.
On January 17, 2025, OPP responded to a home after a man reportedly threatened someone with a knife. When officers arrived, they saw the man inside holding two knives. He refused to let them in or drop his weapons, even after more than an hour of negotiations.
Eventually, the 41-year-old man came out of the house and moved toward the officers while still holding the knives. Two officers fired ARWEN less-lethal rounds. A third officer fired his pistol twice. The man was hit and taken into custody. He was treated in hospital for gunshot wounds to his torso and leg.
The SIU found no reasonable grounds to charge any officer, concluding the force used was justified during the high-risk encounter.
