The Town of Greater Napanee is set to close the CN rail bridge over Highway 401, following recommendations from its Ad Hoc Trails Committee. The decision, made at the March 11, 2025, Council meeting, addresses concerns about trespassing on private property and the Province of Ontario’s plan to widen the 401—making the current bridge too short to span the new width.
Instead of removing the bridge, it will be closed off with barriers expected by May 5. The Trails Committee also proposed a new route for trail development, connecting Napanee’s paths with the Cataraqui Trail network. Their plan includes phased trail expansions both in-town and outward.
Town staff are preparing a report outlining how to move forward with the committee’s ideas, including workplans and budgets. A detailed implementation report is expected during the upcoming budget process. The bridge’s future use remains undecided.
Trail users are encouraged to stay tuned for updates.
