Greater Napanee town council is reviewing a proposed agreement with the Lennox and Addington Chamber of Commerce to run a weekly Farmers’ Market in Market Square and lease office space in the historic town hall.
Under the five-year deal, the Chamber would pay $170 per month to rent two offices. While staff recommended approval, councillors raised concerns at a recent special meeting. Deputy Mayor Brian Calver questioned whether the rent would cover utilities, while Councillor Dave Pinnell noted that no public call for proposals to run a market was issued.
Another key issue is the Chamber’s proposed use of the third floor for meetings and events, where council currently holds meetings. Some councillors suggested using the basement instead once renovations are complete.
Mayor Terry Richardson clarified that the Chamber would not have exclusive control over Market Square, allowing other groups to host markets on different days.
Council will review a revised agreement on Feb. 25 to address these concerns before making a final decision.
