Greater Napanee officials are pushing for lower policing costs after a major budget hike.
Mayor Terry Richardson shared with myFM he and other town representatives met with Ontario’s Solicitor General at the ROMA conference in Toronto this past weekend to discuss concerns about the rising costs of policing provincial institutions within the municipality.
Richardson said the province has promised a new Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) billing system by 2026.
Last year, the town faced a $928,000 increase in its policing bill but received $722,000 in relief. Officials hope for more financial relief in the future.
Beyond policing, Greater Napanee representatives explored ways to improve local transportation at the ROMA conference. They made new contacts and are considering service expansions.
Richardson overall called the conference a success, highlighting the value of networking and provincial discussions.
