Are you a trades person looking for a new challenge in life? Maybe you’re wanting to pass down your knowledge to the next generation? If that’s you, then this is the program for you!
The Limestone District School Board has partnered with Queen’s University to recruit trades-qualified professionals to become certified specialized teachers.
To learn more, myFM spoke with Ena Holtermann, Adjunct Professor and Coordinator of the Technological Education Multi-Session (TEMS) Program at Queen’s, who says the province of Ontario is facing an unprecedented shortage of qualified teachers of technological education.
Melissa Baker-Cox, LDSB program team teacher, told us they began the partnership last year. The school board heard from a lot of alumni and community members showing interest after Queen’s began this program.
The TEMS program is modeled on a traditional apprenticeship program. Students would be on campus for a portion of their learning, then they’d go on to work in classrooms with students.
Following the first term of study, Holtermann says they hold studies right now in the GTA as a central location for everyone to get together on a weekend to develop their capacity to work in a classroom and support these new teachers.
Over the last few years, Baker-Cox says there has been expanded opportunities for students in our area.
If you’re interested in learning more, they’re hosting a recruitment event Wednesday, October 25 from 6-7 p.m. You can register now at: bit.ly/TEMSOct25.
