A more than twenty-year program with Kingston Police has officially come to an end in 2023 due to the challenges of having trained staff available. Kingston Police have officially ended the Mounted Unit that had been in place since 1998. Acting Chief of Police Scott Fraser says, “It was wonderful to have a mounted unit as part of our contingent, but we needed to make some challenging decisions to support staffing needs and public safety throughout the City.” More than $61,000 was raised in 2021 and 2022 to keep the Mounted Program going and to provide year-round care for Murney. Police say the money did not go towards salaries or other administrative costs.
