A proclamation was made at Greater Napanee town council that November 16th as Louis Riel Day.
November 16, 1885, marks the day when Louis Riel was executed by the Canadian government for leading the Northwest Rebellion in defense of the Métis
people. Louis Riel worked to protect the rights, communities, and families of Métis people in Canada. Every year on November 16, the Métis Nation of Ontario celebrates Louis Riel Day to recognize the many contributions of the Métis to Canada and to highlight the challenges Métis people continue to face.
Napanee mayor Marg Isbester read the recommendation to council.
Councilor Dave Pinnell Jr. made note that the towns flag raising procedure places the flag not at town hall, as he wanted to make that clear to the applicant.
As requested, a flag will also be flown at North Fred Hall.
