Local OPP would like to remind operators of off road vehicles that the Highway Traffic Act and Off Road Vehicles Act applies to them. While summer is almost upon us, there has been an increase in complaints regarding off road vehicle (ORV) operators.
While a twelve-sixteen year old can operate an ORV in certain circumstances, there are inherent risks associated with operating ORV’s and this activity should be done with caution. To operate an ORV on a highway, the operator must be at least sixteen years of age with a valid driver’s licence. In addition, anyone operating an ORV on a trail or highway must obey the appropriate laws including wearing a helmet, having registration and proof of insurance.
Familiarize yourself with ORV speed limits and local regulations. As mentioned, the Highway Traffic Act also applies which includes things like careless driving and performing stunts while on an ORV. Remember- there is zero tolerance for alcohol for novice drivers.
Prince Edward County OPP will be conducting ongoing patrols to ensure compliance.
