Support for students during the COVID-19 pandemic has been announced. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has launched the Canada Emergency Student Benefit to provide immediate help, while creating new jobs and doubling student grants. Trudeau says the new student benefit will provide $1,250 a month from May to August and those who take care of someone else or with a disability can get $1,750.
Payments will be made through the CRA. Trudeau says this benefit is designed for returning post-secondary students, those going to college in September, recent graduates and even those who have a job, but who are making under $1,000 per month. Trudeau says they will be working with opposition parties to put the new benefit in place. The Prime Minister says they are creating an additional 76,000 jobs for young people and providing volunteers helping during the COVID-19 pandemic with a grant between $1,000 and $5,000.
