Ontario Provincial Police laid more than 9,800 traffic-related charges during Thanksgiving weekend, with speeding offences accounting for nearly half of the total.
The charges were issued between Oct. 9 and Oct. 12 as part of Operation Impact, an annual national campaign aimed at improving road safety.
The OPP reported 4,924 speeding charges, 506 seatbelt offences, 174 impaired driving charges and 108 distracted driving charges.
Police focused on dangerous driving behaviours that can lead to serious and fatal collisions, including speeding, impaired driving, distracted driving and failing to wear a seatbelt.
Operation Impact is led by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police and takes place during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
The OPP thanked motorists who followed the rules and helped keep roads safer over the long weekend.
Police are reminding drivers to make safety a priority every time they get behind the wheel, not just during holiday traffic campaigns.
