The Greater Napanee Fire Department is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association to promote Fire Prevention Week, running Oct. 4 to 10.
This year’s campaign, “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower,” focuses on preventing lithium-ion battery fires through safe charging habits.
Residents are encouraged to use the charger that came with their device or one approved by the manufacturer. Using the wrong charger can damage a battery and increase the risk of fire.
The fire department also recommends charging devices on hard, flat surfaces such as tables or desks. Beds, couches and pillows can trap heat and block airflow.
People should stop using a device if its battery smells unusual, becomes hot, makes popping sounds, changes shape or colour, or produces smoke.
If safe, damaged devices should be moved away from flammable materials.
