A 6:30 a.m. RIDE check on a Sunday may seem surprising, but the Ontario Provincial Police is warning drivers that alcohol or drugs consumed the night before can still affect their ability to drive safely the next morning.
Police say impaired driving does not only happen late at night, which is why RIDE programs are conducted at different times of the day and week.
The warning is aimed at people who may believe they are safe to drive after sleeping off a night of drinking.
The OPP is reminding drivers to plan ahead if they choose to drink alcohol or use drugs. They should make sure they are sober and fit to drive before getting behind the wheel.
The message also highlights why drivers can encounter RIDE checks at unexpected times, including early Sunday mornings.
Police say the goal is to keep impaired drivers off the road and help prevent crashes before they happen.
