The Knitting Elves are asking the community to help keep local families warm this Christmas by donating handmade mittens for babies and children.
The volunteer group, which knits and crochets items for the Lions Christmas hampers, is preparing for its 10th year of supporting the program. The group typically contributes items to about 40 hampers annually.
Brenda Mayhew says the group has fewer knitters this year and is running short of mittens to match the hats already made.
Mayhew says she started the initiative because she believes everyone deserves a gift at Christmas.
Donations are also used to provide hats, scarves and other items for families. The group sells miscellaneous donated items to raise money for $20 gift cards for teenagers and adults.
Anyone interested in donating or joining the Knitting Elves can contact Mayhew at 613-354-9906 or visit the group’s website.
