The emotional impact of witnessing a serious or fatal collision can last long after emergency crews leave the scene.
OPP Sgt. Ed Sanchuk recently took to social media to recognize the people who step in to help others during these difficult moments, often before first responders arrive.
While stopping to help can make a difference for someone in crisis, the experience can also take an emotional toll on those who witness the incident or assist at the scene.
Sanchuk says people affected by serious or fatal collisions should remember that their own well-being matters, too, and that they don’t have to process what happened on their own.
The message encourages anyone struggling after witnessing a collision or stopping to help to reach out for support. Victim Services Ontario can help people find their local Victim Services organization.
Sanchuk also wanted to make sure the kindness shown by those who stop to help does not go unrecognized.
The reminder extends beyond those directly involved in a crash, recognizing that witnesses and Good Samaritans may also need support after experiencing a traumatic event.
