The Town of Greater Napanee is moving ahead with a $308,000 revitalization of its main soccer field.
Council approved a $273,416.77 work order with Belcon Design Builders, along with $73,416.77 in additional funding from the Atura Best Phase Two Community Benefit Fund.
The project will upgrade about 9,000 square metres of the field and apron. Work includes new Kentucky bluegrass sod, grading and leveling, additional soil and sand, a permanent irrigation system and relocation of three light posts to create a FIFA regulation-sized playing surface.
The total project cost is about $308,416 before taxes, exceeding the $235,000 included in the 2026 capital budget.
Staff expect the field to establish over the winter and be ready for play in spring 2027. Temporary fencing will protect the new turf during that period.
Councillors also stressed the need to prevent vehicles from accessing the field. “Permanent fencing all the way around the perimeter with lockable gates” will be a priority, staff said.
Council members praised staff for continuing to pursue the long-awaited project, which has been discussed for several years.
