Greater Napanee council has approved moving ahead with a public tender for a $10.5-million reconstruction of Centre Street.
The project will rebuild Centre Street from Dundas Street to Isabella Street, along with two blocks of Isabella Street. The work will include new roads, sidewalks, water and sewer infrastructure, storm sewers and buried utilities.
The project is receiving about $7.7 million in provincial funding, with the municipality responsible for additional costs.
Staff say the engineering design is about 85 per cent complete, with the tender expected to be issued in mid-October.
Construction is expected to begin in April 2027 and continue into fall 2028. Work on Centre Street would be staged, with full closures expected on sections of the road.
The plan calls for slightly narrower traffic lanes to allow for wider sidewalks on both sides of Centre Street. Dedicated bike lanes are not possible because of the limited road width.
Council members also raised concerns about increased traffic on nearby streets during construction. A new Municipal 511 system is expected to help direct drivers around closures through mapping apps.
Council’s motion to proceed with the tender was approved. The project must be completed by March 31, 2029, to meet provincial funding requirements.
