A new memorial will be unveiled in Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory on Wednesday as part of the sixth annual Every Child Matters walk hosted by the Tyendinaga Native Women’s Association.
The walk will begin at 11 a.m. at the MBQ Administration Building, 24 Meadow Drive, Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory, with participants travelling toward the Lacrosse Box, 1935 York Road, Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory. The group will stop briefly at the community centre before continuing to the memorial site near the splash pad and skate park.
Jessica Brant, Kanyenkeha coordinator with the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte, helped bring the project to completion after joining the project. The monument that will be unveiled was built by Campbell Monument in Belleville.
The memorial will be unveiled at noon.
The memorial will include a QR code linking to a new website. The site will provide information about the memorial and residential schools attended by children from the community.
Brant said the memorial will give people a place to pause and reflect.
Orange Shirt Day began in 2013 as a grassroots movement to raise awareness about residential schools and their impact on children and families. In 2021, Sept. 30 became the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
The day is a time for reflection, healing, learning and understanding.
