The Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte are receiving more than $66 million in federal funding to expand water infrastructure and connect 305 homes to safe, reliable drinking water.
MP Chris Malette and Chief R. Donald Maracle announced the $66.4-million investment Tuesday through the federal government’s Build Communities Strong Fund.
The project will connect currently unserviced areas to the community’s existing water treatment plant. It is expected to improve water security, fire protection and climate resilience while supporting future housing development.
The work will be completed in four phases, with completion targeted for 2030. The full watermain system is expected to cover about 35 kilometres.
Phase one, focused on the east end of the community, has already gone to tender.
Chief Maracle said he has long advocated for safe drinking water in the community, noting that contaminated wells and water shortages have created health concerns.
He said water testing showed serious contamination in some wells and that droughts have also caused shortages.
The project will provide water and fire protection to the remaining unserviced homes, while creating opportunities for future development.
The federal government says the funding is part of its $51-billion Build Communities Strong Fund, which supports infrastructure projects across Canada.
