The Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte celebrated the opening of five new roads with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday.
The project includes extensions to Homeland Drive and Hickory Lane, along with three new right-of-ways named Orchard Lane, Whitetail Lane and Muskrat Lane.
The new roads will create opportunities for community members to build homes while improving connectivity to the community’s water service system.
The project was completed with funding and work from the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte Infrastructure, Roads and Water departments, along with Monument Group and Fidelity Engineering and Construction Inc.
The project also highlighted the presence of apple and pear trees in the community. Three trees had to be removed to make way for the new right-of-ways.
To help replace them, the Environmental Supervisor collected seeds from the trees and successfully produced seedlings that are expected to be planted in the community in the future.
