The Napanee Sea Cadets are inviting new and returning members to a welcome-back barbecue at Selby Community Hall Thursday, Sept. 3.
The event runs from 6:30 to about 8 p.m. and will give prospective cadets and their families a chance to learn about the program.
Lt(N) Andy Ashworth, the unit’s commanding officer, said the Cadet Program is often overlooked.
The Napanee group has about 20 cadets and five staff. Activities thoughout the year include sailing, seamanship, communications, drill, physical fitness and leadership training.
Ashworth said the program follows a youth-leading-youth model, with senior cadets taking an active role in guiding others.
The program is open to youth ages 12 to 18. Ashworth said there is no cost to join, receive a uniform or take part in activities.
Adults interested in supporting the local program are also welcome to attend.
