Prince Edward County OPP is reminding residents that e-scooters are not permitted on public roads, sidewalks or highways in the municipality.
The county has not opted into Ontario’s e-scooter pilot program and currently prohibits motorized scooters in public areas under By-law 1733-2006.
The by-law defines a motorized scooter as a two-wheeled, skateboard-type device powered by a motor. In some cases, e-scooters may also be considered motor vehicles under Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act.
Depending on the device, operators could face requirements for licence plates, insurance, a vehicle permit and a properly licensed driver.
Police say violations could result in charges, fines, vehicle impoundment or other penalties.
E-scooters may only be operated on private property in Prince Edward County.
