Greater Napanee’s new in-town trail project has reached its first major milestone with the removal of about 1,400 metres of rail along the former CN spur line.
Contractors removed rails, spikes and plates from the section between Dairy Avenue and the Highway 401 bridge. The materials were cut into sections and taken to a local metal recycling facility.
Some brushing and tree removal was also completed to allow specialized equipment to access the trail.
The next phase is expected to begin in early September, with Town Public Works staff adding aggregate to the trail bed and controlling vegetation along the route.
Construction will then continue toward Crouse Street, crossing County Road 1 and following Church Street south. The trail will connect with a loop through Riverside Cemetery and existing cemetery roadways.
The completed trail will expand Greater Napanee’s active transportation network and create new opportunities for outdoor recreation.
The project is expected to be finished by the end of October 2026.
