Loyalist Township council has appointed former chief administrative officer Diane Pearce as deputy mayor for the remainder of its current term.
Council made the appointment last week after hearing from three candidates for the vacant position.
The deputy mayor role became vacant June 15 after Nathan Townend left the position to take a staff job with Lennox and Addington County.
The township’s clerk’s division asked council members to suggest potential candidates and then contacted those nominated to confirm their interest.
Former Loyalist mayor Bill Lowry and former councillor John Ibey were also considered for the position.
Township staff have developed a procedure for filling council vacancies when a by-election cannot be held. The process is intended to provide council with a consistent and transparent framework for considering appointments.
Pearce will serve as deputy mayor until the current council term ends.
