The Ontario government is investing $25 million to support Indigenous-led energy projects across the province.
The funding will provide support for 148 projects through the Indigenous Energy Support Program, administered through the Independent Electricity System Operator.
The province says the investment will help Indigenous communities participate in Ontario’s growing energy sector through initiatives focused on energy planning, infrastructure development, skills training and economic opportunities.
The program provides funding in three main areas: capacity building, economic development, and energy resiliency and monitoring.
The economic development stream has also been expanded to include support for remote First Nation communities working to reduce reliance on diesel powered electricity generation.
Officials say the investment is part of Ontario’s broader plan to build a reliable, affordable and secure energy system while creating more opportunities for Indigenous communities.
Since Indigenous energy support programs began in 2009, the Independent Electricity System Operator says it has provided about $107.5 million in funding to 185 Indigenous communities and organizations.
Applications for the 2026 Indigenous Energy Support Program funding intake are now open, with a deadline of October 2, 2026.
