National Drowning Prevention Week is reminding families that a fun day near the water can turn dangerous in seconds.
Officials across the province are marking the week, which is underway until Saturday, with the theme, “Prepare to be Water Smart,” encouraging parents and caregivers to plan ahead, build skills and make safe choices.
Children should always be watched around pools, lakes, rivers and beaches. Adults should stay within arm’s reach of young children and avoid distractions such as phones, books or conversations.
Mary-Kate Townsend from the Canadian Drowning Prevention Coalition says take stock before hitting the water.
Kids should wear a properly fitted lifejacket when boating or playing near open water. Inflatable toys and water wings are not substitutes for approved safety equipment or adult supervision.
Townsend adds introduce them to the lifeguards on duty too.
Swimming lessons can help children become more confident, but even strong swimmers need supervision. Families are also encouraged to learn first aid and CPR, keep backyard pools securely fenced and make sure gates close and latch properly.
More than 400 Canadians die in preventable water-related incidents each year. Safety experts say preparation, attention and simple precautions can help keep summer memories happy.
