WM has officially opened a new state-of-the-art recycling facility in Greater Napanee, marking a major investment in Ontario’s Blue Box recycling system.
The facility is one of two new Ontario recycling centres, along with a site in Cambridge, representing nearly $300 million in investment. Together, the facilities are expected to process about 30 per cent of the province’s Blue Box recyclable materials.
The Greater Napanee facility uses advanced mechanical and optical sorting technology, automation and artificial intelligence to improve the efficiency and accuracy of recycling. The site is designed to handle a wider range of accepted materials as Ontario’s standardized Blue Box program continues to expand.
The facility also includes an education centre where students, community groups and other visitors can learn how the recycling process works.
More than 45 local jobs have been created in operations, maintenance and technical services.
The project supports Ontario’s transition to an extended producer responsibility recycling system, where producers fund the collection and processing of Blue Box materials.
