Loyalist Township says residents in Amherstview may notice stronger odours this week as biosolids, aka “sludge”, are removed from the local sewage treatment plant.
The township said a contractor will haul sludge from the Amherstview Sewage Treatment Plant as part of regular maintenance. The material is a normal byproduct of wastewater treatment.
Officials say cleaning lagoon and aeration cells can stir up built-up solids and temporarily increase odours, depending on wind direction. Work is expected to last a few days and is scheduled on weekdays to limit impacts.
The township operates two sewage treatment plants that treat wastewater using mechanical processes, bacteria, chemicals and UV light before returning treated water to the environment. Officials say routine maintenance helps prevent costly repairs and keeps the system operating properly under provincial environmental standards. Seasonal changes can also temporarily affect odours.
